Shaun Easterday
Principal Gameplay/Technical Designer

My work for Age of Empires 4:
-
I led a team of designers in the creation of the civilizations.
-
I established the design process that would be used to guide the creation of the civilizations, including the documentation standard.
-
This process included an initial phase of historical research on the civilization that we wanted to build. I both conducted research and reviewed the research of the other designers on the team.
-
We also consulted with a history professor that was an expert for each of the civilizations to maintain as much of the history as we could in the final product.
-
I encouraged the designers as much as possible to take ownership of certain civilizations, ideally to see the civilization through from design to final.
-
While ownership was important, I also established frequent group discussions and reviews so no one got too isolated in their design. Designs didn't have to be completed to start, even early ideas were talked about.
-
I coordinated the work with the other departments such as art, engineering, UI/UX, animation to ensure they had vision and input on the design through development.
-
The civilizations team was responsible for the full implementation outside of dependencies from other departments.
-
I have a strong technical design background so I would help the other designers learn the tools if needed, or help with any issues that would come up.
-
I triaged and assigned bugs for the civilizations team, ensuring that we maintained a low bug count throughout the project.
-
At the start of the project there was a significant engine change. During that time I worked to review and implement test behaviors to ensure everything was still okay in the new engine.
-
During this project I mentored a number of interns that came on the project through a yearly program with a local technical college.
